Fishing and Travel Reports

Fishing and Travel Reports from Casa Blanca.

Another great week with varying weather conditions. No precipitation but mild to strong winds and scattered cloud cover. Anglers this week did very well for all species. Congratulations to Bill A. and Wyman B for their grand slams, Wyman with three permit landed in one day! Joe D. made permit fishing look easy as usual, with two under his belt for the week, both tagged for the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust Caribbean tagging program. Total permit tally for the week is seven landed and two hooked- one of which took off with a fly line still attached. Some very nice snook seen and hooked in the bays this week, and tarpon were hungry in the backcountry as well. Thanks for an excellent week!

A quiet week with great fishing. Father daughter team Scott and Paige T. stayed on with us and by the end were salty anglers indeed- they have no doubt bought Albuquerque out of eight weights by now! We got the management out a little bit too this week and discovered some odd behavior by the bonefish in the backcountry. It seemed to us like they were staging up for spawning- large groups of well over a hundred fish, tightly packed together, surging around. Very few singles. We are heading into the full moon which may have something to do with that.

A great week to be fishing the Bays, despite a few stout wind days. We had quite a few first time salt water anglers who were broken in right. Father and daughter team Paige and Scott T. experienced some rabid tarpon in Santa Rosa, where water levels are starting to drop. Page had a sixty pounder on for several jumps..not bad for only having fly fished three times! The strong bone fishing continues with four to seven pound fish, good for the Kean family, who brought spinning rods along- just in case- but never needed them. Veteran angler Tim T managed a super slam this week, finished out with a twenty pound snook and all accomplished by nine thirty in the morning. Eric A. and Aaron E. tried a few days in E. Bay, where the permit eluded them but the bonefish were kind.

We've closed the lodges to cater to a private party over the  Xmas and New Year holidays. There are few places in the world like the island of Punta Pajaros to share with loved ones, and a fantastic time was had by all. The weather was spectacular, and the primary interest was not fly fishing, so the fish in our special spots all got a reprieve. Lots of swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports, some amazing bird watching and wildlife, biking, canoeing, kayaking and Mayan ruin tours. We look forward to our next group of fishermen, arriving Jan. 07 2012. Our best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year for all,

Rita, Johnny and the Punta Pajaros Team

Another great week for big bonefish, tarpon in the backcountry were also starting to get back on their feed. Snook were fairly scarce. Anglers this week had a great attitude, and just wanted to catch fish, no matter the species. On their first day out, it was permit that swam their way...congratulations to Jeff J. on catching his first.

Still dealing with winds trending from the north and below average temperatures for the first part of this week, but with the system moving out the fish got back on their feed. Dock fishing at night was really good, with some large tarpon jumped on black deceivers and a permit taken on a small crab pattern. Once again bonefish were plentiful, large and happy to take a fly. Kyle H. came to visit with his lovely wife Cindy (a surprise b-day present for K) and he managed to catch the largest snook of his life and on the last day came through with not one but two permit, both of which were tagged for the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust tagging program we initiated this fall. His last permit was on his last cast of the trip. Guide David asked, "Are you ready?" and Kyle began to reel up, thinking it was time to go home....instead it was time to cast to a hungry school of permit, who fought over his squimp pattern! What a way to end a trip.

We were somewhat challenged by the weather this week with a cold front blowing through and strong winds out of the north. Just the same, guests put up an impressive tally of bonefish. We are still seeing larger bonefish than past years. Despite the poor weather, anglers took advantage of the couple of warmer days towards the end of the week to catch permit, seven total between both lodges. Tarpon fishing in Santa Rosa was a bit off, but some were still seen and caught. Congratulations to Nate T. on his first. Also to Zach W. who caught all species on what we hope will be his first of many salt water trips.

This week we had ideal conditions and lovely weather, with guests from the UK and Italy. Lots of above average bonefish caught and some great permit also.

What a week!!! We had the pleasure to host a WorldCast Angler's group at Playa Blanca, and the stars were in perfect permit alignment. Anglers managed 17 permit, two grand slams, 10 tarpon, 8 snook, and about 280 bonefish....17 permit, with a few absolute slabs!!! While the bay was definitely holding feeding fish, the backcountry tarpon were acting a bit aloof this week. Still a lot of fresh water in the lagoon system, but less every week.

This week was Mountain Angler's annual couple's week, with a great bunch of men and women. Weather was ideal but for one day of rain. The back country fishing for tarpon in the Santa Rosa lagoon was a little off this week, with so much fresh water added to the system, but fishing in both Ascension and Espiritu Santo Bays was excellent. Once again above average bonefish were caught in both bays, averaging four to five pounds and several in the eight pound class. Some nice snook as well were seen and caught out in the bays-possibly pushed out of their normal haunts by all the rain. Overall, twelve permit were caught between the two lodges this week, on a variety of crab patterns and squimps.  A great time had by all.
